Degree classes on the 5-point scale
Most Nigerian universities use a 5-point CGPA scale. The usual degree classes are:
- First Class: 4.50 to 5.00
- Second Class Upper (2:1): 3.50 to 4.49
- Second Class Lower (2:2): 2.40 to 3.49
- Third Class: 1.50 to 2.39
- Pass: 1.00 to 1.49
Converting to a 4-point GPA
There's no single official conversion. Many applicants multiply their CGPA by 4 and divide by 5 as a rough guide, but universities abroad and credential evaluators (such as WES) use their own methods, often grade by grade. Always state your CGPA and the scale it's on (for example 3.85/5.00), and follow the scholarship's instructions if it asks for a conversion.
Polytechnic HND results use class names (Distinction, Upper Credit, Lower Credit, Pass) rather than the university scale.

Questions
Is a 2:1 enough for a scholarship abroad?
Many UK and European scholarships ask for at least a Second Class Upper (2:1) or its equivalent. Some accept a 2:2 with strong work experience. Each Providia listing shows a minimum grade where the provider states one.
